JFK is one of the worst airports in the world for connections. Between the separate terminals that aren't connected airside, mandatory immigration processing for every international arrival, and the AirTrain transfer that eats up 20 minutes, tight layovers at JFK are a recipe for disaster. Here's what you actually need to know.
Recommended connection times at JFK
| Connection Type | Airline Minimum | What We Recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic → Domestic | 30 min | 75 min |
| Domestic → International | 50 min | 120 min (2 hrs) |
| International → Domestic | 120 min | 180 min (3 hrs) |
| International → International | 120 min | 180 min (3 hrs) |
Add 60-90 minutes if you have checked luggage on international connections. You must physically reclaim your bags, go through customs, and recheck them.
The JFK AirTrain problem
JFK's terminals are NOT connected inside security. If your connection requires changing terminals, you must exit to the public area, take the AirTrain (a light rail that circles the airport), and re-clear security at your new terminal. This alone takes 15-25 minutes on a good day. During peak hours, add security line time on top of that.
Why JFK is especially tricky
Mandatory CBP for everyone
Unlike some international airports where you can transit without clearing immigration, the United States requires ALL arriving international passengers to go through Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Even if you're just connecting to another international flight, you must clear immigration, collect your bags, go through customs, recheck your bags, and clear security again. During peak hours (10am-2pm, 5pm-8pm), CBP processing alone can take 60-90 minutes.
Terminal layout
JFK has six active terminals (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8), and they're spread across a massive footprint. Some key things to know:
- Terminal 1: Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Lufthansa, and others
- Terminal 4: Delta's international hub, plus Emirates, Etihad, Singapore Airlines
- Terminal 5: JetBlue's hub
- Terminal 7: British Airways, Icelandair, and others
- Terminal 8: American Airlines
If you're connecting within the same terminal (say, Delta international arriving T4 and Delta domestic departing T4), your life is much easier. If you're connecting between terminals, budget that extra AirTrain time.
Peak hours to avoid
The worst times for CBP lines at JFK are 10am-2pm (when the European morning flights land) and 5pm-8pm (when Asia/Pacific flights arrive). If you have any control over your flight times, try to arrive outside these windows.
Pro tip: Use Mobile Passport Control
Download the Mobile Passport Control app before you travel. It lets you submit your customs declaration digitally and often has a separate, much shorter line at CBP. It can save you 30-45 minutes during peak times.
What to do if your connection is tight
If you're already booked with a tight connection at JFK, there are a few things you can do. First, check if both flights are on the same ticket (single booking reference). If they are, the airline is responsible for getting you to your destination even if you miss the connection. If they're separate tickets, you're on your own — and you should seriously consider rebooking.
Once you land, move fast. Don't wait for everyone to deplane — have your documents ready, know which terminal you need, and head straight to the AirTrain if you're changing terminals. If you have Global Entry or Mobile Passport, use it. Every minute counts.

The bottom line
JFK is manageable if you plan for it, but it punishes tight connections more than almost any other major airport. For domestic-to-domestic on the same airline and terminal, 75 minutes is fine. For anything involving international flights, don't go below 3 hours. Your future self will thank you.
